Diagnosing Crohn’s Disease: Tests and Procedures

Having a healthy digestive system is something you may take for granted. Until you get a diagnosis of Crohn’s Disease in Hialeah, Coral Gables, Kendall, & Pembroke Pines, FL, it is hard to imagine what a severe impact it has on your life. The team at Digestive Medicine Associates has nine board-certified gastroenterologists who are experienced in all areas of the digestive system and accept new patients in the Greater Miami area.

What is Crohn's Disease?

Crohn's Disease is an inflammatory bowel disease. Over time, it can scar the wall of the intestine, leading to obstruction. No one test or procedure can identify the condition you may be suffering from, like Crohn's Disease. Your medical history will be taken, your diet and lifestyle will be discussed, and a physical exam will be performed.

Tests

Blood test

The first test usually performed is a blood test. This will look for certain biomarkers indicative of inflammation. While inflammation does not diagnose Crohn's disease, it is one of the symptoms that can hint at what is going on.

Stool test

A stool test may also be performed to look for the same biomarkers. The doctor will supply the stool collection kit and arrange for it to be tested.

Procedures

Colonoscopes

A colonoscopy is an internal exam of the inside of the colon. It is done with a flexible tube with a light and camera attached. The doctor can also take a tissue sample so it can be tested. To perform a colonoscopy, preparation must be done to ensure the colon is clean and empty. This requires taking a liquid laxative or laxative pills and only eating and drinking a clear liquid diet for the recommended time before the procedure. You will be given a sedative to make sure the procedure is comfortable.

Endoscopy

An upper endoscopy involves entering through the mouth, down into the stomach, and as far as the beginning of the small intestine. It may be used when stomach pain, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing are symptoms.

Capsule endoscopy

A capsule endoscopy for Crohn’s disease in Hialeah, Coral Gables, Kendall, & Pembroke Pines, FL involves swallowing a capsule with a small camera that will record the entire digestive system. It will pass in a regular bowel movement. Meanwhile, the camera will send the information it records to your doctor.
